Cables are replaced in pairs
The two lift cables have done exactly the same number of cycles. Replacing only the one that snapped leaves the other at the end of its life, and it usually goes within a few months. A pair is $349 and it is the honest way to do it.
The drum is half the job
A cable rarely fails in the middle. It frays where it winds onto the drum, and if the drum is scored or a set screw has slipped, a brand new cable frays in the same place. We check and re-time the drums before winding new cable on.
Do not lift it by hand
With a cable off, the spring load is no longer balanced across the door, and a door that feels light can drop suddenly. Leave it where it is. If it is stuck open we will get to you today.
What actually breaks, and why it breaks faster here
Fraying at the drum
The last few wraps take the most load and the sharpest bend, so that is where the strands break first. A cable that looks perfect at eye level can be down to a few strands up at the drum, which is why it gets looked at on every service.
Rust from the inside out
Salt in the air and a garage that gets washed down do the same thing: water sits in the lay of the cable and corrodes it from within, out of sight. On coastal streets we fit galvanised cable as standard and expect a shorter life than the same door would give inland.
A drum that has slipped
If a set screw loosens, one drum unwinds slightly further than the other. The door goes out of level, one cable goes slack at the bottom of travel, and it jumps off the drum. Re-setting and re-timing both drums is part of the repair, not an extra.
Safety cables on extension springs
If your springs are stretched along the horizontal tracks rather than sitting on a bar above the opening, each one should have a safety cable running through it. Plenty of older Miami doors do not have them. A spring that lets go without one becomes a projectile, so we fit them whenever we find them missing.
