Sudden noise usually means something has worn through rather than drifted: a roller that has lost its bearing, a hinge that has cracked, or a chain that has gone slack. A door that has gradually got louder is normally dry hardware and worn steel rollers.
A belt-drive opener, and it is not close. Chain drives transmit noise through the rail. If there is a bedroom over or beside the garage, belt drive is worth the difference.
No. WD-40 is a solvent and displaces the grease you actually want in the bearings. Use a proper garage door lubricant, a silicone or lithium spray made for the job, on hinges, roller stems, bearings and the spring.
Usually dramatically. Worn steel rollers are the single most common cause of a noisy door, and nylon replacements are far quieter and hold up better in Florida's humidity and salt air. Our published guide puts a full set at roughly $150 to $250.
Noise itself is not, but it is often the first sign of something that becomes dangerous: a failing roller, loose hardware, or a door drifting out of balance and overloading the springs. It is cheaper to deal with at the noise stage.
