Counter shutters

What is a counter shutter, and where does it go?

A counter shutter is a short, wide rolling shutter that closes a serving counter instead of a doorway. It sits on the counter itself, so it is sized to the clear opening above the worktop, and the curtain is aluminium slat. You find them on pharmacies, canteens, concession stands, teller lines and bar fronts.

A counter shutter starts at $5,300 installed and runs about $9,050 at an opening 10 ft by 10 ft. Most are made to the opening rather than picked from a size chart, so the width, face or between jamb mounting and the finish move the price.

Rolling security grilles

What is a rolling security grille?

A rolling security grille is an open lattice curtain that coils into a hood above a storefront. Closed, the unit is secure but still lit and still visible from the concourse or the street, which is why mall landlords write grilles into the lease rather than solid doors.

Aluminium is the light one, easier to work by hand on a long opening. Type 304 stainless is heavier and finished mill or polished. Polycarbonate replaces the open lattice with clear panels, so the opening is closed against dust and hands. Brick pattern staggers the links row to row, so the curtain reads as a brick wall, and is chosen for lobbies and flagship frontages. Where there is no room above the opening for a coil, a side folding gate stacks to one side instead.

Which sizes and materials can you get?

Every shutter and grille is made to the opening. These are the models we order, with the installed starting price our shop publishes for each one. Every figure is a starting point, not a firm quote: the exact number depends on the width, the height and how the unit is operated.

Manual or motor

Manual or motor operated: which do you need?

Go manual for a small or occasional opening, and fit a motor for one that is opened every day. Small counter shutters lift by hand or with a crank, and longer grilles take a hand chain with gear reduction so one person can lift them. A shutter or grille in daily use is better on an electric operator mounted beside the barrel, quoted separately from the curtain. We check the size, the weight and the voltage available at the opening before we price it.

Fire rated openings

What about a counter opening in a fire rated wall?

It needs a labelled rolling fire door, not a standard counter shutter. A labelled door stays open in daily use and closes on its own in a fire, when a fusible link melts or a listed release takes a signal from the fire alarm. The curtain, hood, guides and closing hardware are one listed assembly with a rating matched to the wall, and NFPA 80 requires a drop test at installation and every year after. We quote it in writing within 24 hours of your opening size and wall rating. More on our fire rated doors page.

Installation and repair

Do you install and repair counter shutters and grilles?

Yes, both. For a new unit we measure the opening and the room above and beside it, quote it in writing, order the curtain to size and fit the hood, guides and operator. An exterior opening in Miami-Dade or Broward needs a door with a product approval for the wind pressure at the building, and we confirm that before anything is ordered.

For a unit that has stopped working, troubleshooting is $495 and slat repair is $1,095 minimum, on any make. The faults and the full repair price list are on our rolling door repair page, and the rest of our commercial work is on commercial door repair in Miami.

FAQ

Counter shutter and grille questions

How much does a counter shutter cost in Miami?

A counter shutter starts at $5,300 installed, about $7,600 at an opening 8 ft by 8 ft and about $9,050 at 10 ft by 10 ft, with any operator quoted on top. Most are made to the opening, so the width, the mounting and the finish are what move the number. Every figure is a starting point and the written quote is for your exact opening.

How much does a rolling security grille cost?

Installed prices start at $4,900 for a polycarbonate grille, $5,250 for an aluminium grille and $16,400 for a stainless grille. A side folding gate starts at $3,450. Brick pattern grilles are quoted per opening. The exact figure depends on the width, the height and how the grille is operated.

Should I choose an aluminium or a stainless grille?

Aluminium is lighter, easier on the header and easier to work by hand on a long opening, and comes mill or anodised. Type 304 stainless is heavier, costs more and comes mill or polished; it is the usual choice in malls and for jewellery and phone stores. Both are open lattice, so the store stays lit and visible when it is closed.

Can a counter shutter or grille be motorized?

Yes. Small and occasional openings are usually worked by hand chain, crank or push up. A shutter or grille opened every day is better on an electric operator, quoted separately from the curtain. We check the size, the weight and the power available at the opening before we price it.

What if there is no room above the opening for a coil?

Use a side folding gate. It is a scissor lattice that stacks to one side, or splits to both sides, instead of coiling overhead, so it needs no barrel or hood above the opening. It is common in older Miami retail and starts at $3,450 installed.

Do you repair counter shutters and grilles you did not install?

Yes. Troubleshooting is $495 and slat repair is $1,095 minimum, on any make. The usual faults are a shutter that sticks halfway, slide bolts and locks that no longer line up, and bent slats or links at the bottom of the curtain.
