San Juan, on a domestic sailing

Puerto Rico is inside the US customs territory, so doors going from Miami to San Juan are not an import in the customs sense and carry no import duty. The cargo still sails as ocean freight, and under the Jones Act it moves on US flagged ships between Florida and the island.

We quote the San Juan lane per revenue ton for the crates your doors need. If the site is in Ponce, Mayagüez or anywhere outside the metro area, the carrier's agent or your trucker takes it on from San Juan; tell us the town on the request.

Your written quote

What your written quote covers

One written quote for Puerto Rico, in US dollars: the doors, crating in Miami, delivery to your carrier and ocean freight to San Juan. It ships as domestic cargo, so there is no export clearance and no import duty; local IVU or excise may apply on arrival. The crate sizes, the terms and every port we quote are on the export page.

Hurricane rated doors after Irma and María

Puerto Rico rewrote its building code after the 2017 hurricanes, basing it on the 2018 International Building Code, and its design wind speeds are among the highest anywhere in the United States. Your architect or engineer turns that into a design pressure for each opening. Send the figure with the sizes and we match a door that meets it.

The wind rated and impact rated doors we export are the ones we install at home in the Florida High Velocity Hurricane Zone, and each ships with its product approval documents. A Florida approval is not automatically accepted in Puerto Rico, so confirm with your designer or the permit office (OGPe) before you order.

What you handle in Puerto Rico

There is no duty, but Puerto Rico's Hacienda collects the sales and use tax (IVU), and on some goods a local excise tax, on goods brought onto the island, and a business importing them declares the shipment before release. Your broker or the carrier's agent in San Juan can tell you how that applies to your order.

There is no export clearance and no import entry. The one federal filing is the electronic export information (EEI), needed when a line is over the filing threshold, and we file it. Quotes and invoices are in US dollars, and you can deal with us in Spanish or English.

Parts and openers for doors already on the island

Not every order is a new door. Torsion springs, cables, rollers, hinges, openers, remotes and gate operator boards ship too, and they usually fit in a small crate or on a pallet with the rest of the order.

Send the door size, the spring measurements or the model of the opener, and we match the parts before we quote. Getting the spring size right before it sails matters more on an island than it does in Miami, where a wrong part is a drive away.

    FAQ

    Frequently asked questions

Do you ship garage doors to Puerto Rico?

Yes, to San Juan. We crate the doors in Miami and deliver them to your carrier or forwarder (FCA Miami). Your written quote covers the doors, crating, delivery in Miami and ocean freight. The written quote comes by email within one business day, or right away when the doors are in our price book.

Is there import duty on garage doors shipped to Puerto Rico?

No customs duty, because Puerto Rico is inside the US customs territory. Puerto Rico's sales and use tax (IVU), and on some goods a local excise tax, still applies on arrival, and that part is the buyer's. Ask your broker or the carrier's agent how it is collected for your shipment.

Will a Florida approved hurricane door pass in Puerto Rico?

It may, but that is for your designer and the permit office (OGPe) to decide, not us. We send the product approval documents and the design pressure rating for each door so they can check it against the Puerto Rico code before you order.

Can you ship springs and opener parts to Puerto Rico?

Yes. Springs, cables, rollers, openers, remotes and gate operator parts ship with or without a door. Send the door size and the spring measurements or the opener model so we match the parts before anything sails.
